Behind the Scenes of Policy-Making: Bridging Theory and Practice

On January 28, 2025, the LSE branch of the Andalus Committee and the LSESU Think Tank were delighted to host a conversation with Professor Andrés Velasco, Dean of the LSE School of Public Policy and former Finance Minister of Chile.

The discussion focused on the practical implications of policy-making and how to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Drawing on Professor Velasco’s extensive experience, participants gained a unique, behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to translate ideas into actionable policies, going far beyond the traditional classroom setting. The conversation covered a broad range of topics, including the role of social media in politics, the challenge of enacting long-term reforms, the future of MERCOSUR, strategies for preventing democratic backsliding, and the impact of emerging technologies and AI.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Professor Velasco for his time, and to all who participated in making this event a success. We look forward to welcoming you at our upcoming events.
